Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk last week officially opened Brisbane’s latest dedicated student accommodation residence, Student One on Adelaide Street.

As of 1 July 2016, up to 687 domestic and international residents can now call Brisbane’s premium student accommodation, Student One on Adelaide Street, home.

Relative newcomer to the Brisbane market, Student One is meeting the demand for increasingly sophisticated student accommodation in the city.

Located in the city’s centre, Student One on Adelaide has breathed new life into a commercial block first built in 1985, with a $110m redevelopment of what was formerly known as Boeing House, to create a completely student-centric environment.

Student One Chief Executive Officer Tim Weston said Student One had thoroughly researched the types of services and facilities domestic and international students seek and then designed accommodation to exceed these needs, at a size and magnitude never before achieved in the Brisbane CBD.

“We know students consider many factors, such as proximity, transport infrastructure and support services, when deciding where to study and live. In student accommodation they are looking for socially vibrant, inclusive and safe environments equipped with the latest technology and high-quality amenities.

“At Student One on Adelaide Street residents will enjoy unrivalled views of Brisbane’s inner city, the riverside, as well as overlooking St John’s Cathedral from fully-furnished, air-conditioned rooms. They also have access to unlimited, free internet and Wi-Fi, extensive communal spaces and study areas, fitness and games areas, free share bikes, ground floor cafes, dining and grocery outlets, plus a 24-hour onsite management team,” Mr Weston said.

“Study is a particularly important time for people to develop life-long skills, friendships and professional networks, so in our accommodation we have created spaces that encourage a strong focus on achieving your academic potential, as well as community living such as the outdoor BBQ area, Gym, communal kitchen, games room and indoor cinema.

“We opened in good time for the university second semester and we are seeing a strong influx of residents from around the world, as well as from regional Queensland and New South Wales,” Mr Weston said.

Daniel Chew is a third-year student from Singapore who is completing his Bachelor of Science, Majoring in Genetics at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.

The 22-year old is spending his final year of study in Australia living at Student One and said Brisbane was an easy choice over southern universities due to lifestyle factors, coupled with easy access to reputable universities.

“I’d never been to Brisbane before but had visited Sydney and Melbourne, so when I was researching which city and university to choose to complete my degree, it became more obvious the more I looked,” he said.

“The climate here in Brisbane really suits me, having lived in Singapore where it’s humid most of the year. I wasn’t keen on the colder temperatures of southern Australia.

“I trusted my gut, went with Brisbane and haven’t looked back.

“I’m challenged in my studies and even when I’m not at Uni, have access to free internet and WiFi at Student One, which allows me to study anywhere I want…. When I’m not in study mode, I can easily walk out my front door and be minutes from just about anything I need,” he said.

With a further two inner city student accommodation developments currently under construction, each with their own unique features, on Wharf Street and Elizabeth Street, Student One is doing its part to alleviate the growing student accommodation shortage in Brisbane.

Mr Weston said that by 2019 the three Student One residencies will offer 2,400 accommodation places, taking pressure off educational institutes as well as rental stocks within a 10km radius of the city.
