Construction is set to commence on an expanded car park at Brisbane Airport’s Domestic Terminal as part of the ongoing $5 billion Future BNE transformation.

Future BNE encompasses more than 150 projects including upgrades to the Domestic and International Terminals, the construction of Terminal 3’s first stage, and additional commercial, industrial, and retail developments.

The expansion of the car park will provide an essential boost of 1,700 additional parking spaces for ParkLong customers, addressing increasing capacity challenges, especially during peak holiday seasons.

“Since Covid we have seen an increased share of people wanting to drive to the airport. We continue to see the demand for parking grow as Brisbane’s population expands and we’re investing now to cater for current and future passenger needs,” according to Martin Ryan, Executive General Manager Commercial, Brisbane Airport.

The new spaces are part of an extension to the current P2 car park and will involve the removal of the existing 30-minute free parking area and space for vehicles over 2.4m in height.

New 30-minute free parking

Starting from 11 March, Brisbane Airport will offer 30 minutes of free parking at the Domestic ParkShort car park (located on Level 2 of the P1 car park), offering visitors a closer option to the terminals than the current location.

This will unlock 30 minutes of free car parking to over 400,000 customers that use ParkShort each year.

Overheight Vehicles

The expansion project requires the closure of the current overheight vehicle parking space from 25 March, redirecting travelers with vehicles over 2.4m high to use AIRPARK, with free buses to and from the terminal.  Travellers will need to allow extra time for their journey.

“We too are sorry to see the dedicated overheight area go which is currently used by around a dozen vehicles at any one time, but the trade-off is the creation of 1,700 urgently needed parking spaces.”

Sustainability

The vast roof of the carpark extension will feature solar panels, complementing Brisbane Airports significant renewable power generation capacity. Sustainable building and procurement practices will also be part of the project.

Construction will begin shortly with the project aiming to be completed by mid-2025.

In addition to parking enhancements, Brisbane Airport is committed to supporting active transport users by providing storage for scooters and bikes, sheltered from the elements, just a short walk from the Domestic Terminal.

Brisbane Airport remains committed to minimising disruptions to customers and pedestrians throughout the construction process and is implementing measures to ensure a smooth and safe journey for all.
