South Bank’s aging Arbour View Cafe precinct has been transformed into Flowstate which is described as a new temporary open-air pavilion and creative space.

South Bank Corporation Chair Dr Catherin Bull AM said Flowstate, the Corporation’s first significant redevelopment in the Parklands since River Quay in 2011, provides a tangible demonstration of creative urban recycling in the heart of the precinct.

“Around the world, leading public precincts are constantly evolving and it is the Corporation’s role to oversee, adapt and transform South Bank so it remains relevant, desirable and exciting both publicly and commercially,” Dr Bull said.

Site specifics remain tightly-guarded ahead of next month’s unveiling and program launch, however Corporation management is keen to announce that after a national search specialist Australian architecture and performance design firm Stukel Stone were engaged to transform the 3000sqm space in the heart of South Bank.

The new area will comprise three distinctive experiences including a grassy relaxation zone, an immersive digital installation, and a vibrant performance pavilion.

Stukel Stone directors Daniel Stukel Beasly and Tobhiyah Stone Feller, said “Flowstate blurs the distinctions between landscape and architecture, theatre and public space. We have provided multiple possibilities in the design for how the site can be used and are very interested to see how performers, artists and audiences will respond and activate the site in unique and unexpected ways.”

Dr Bull said the new interim use continues South Bank’s 25-year legacy as a ‘people’s place’ and will stimulate conversation about city form.

Flowstate will open to the public late January 2018, with the program of free events to launch Monday 29 January.
