High ropes courses, edible gardens, water play areas and pedestrian and cycle bridges have been included in the next phase of the Victoria Park project.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner today released the Victoria Park / Barrambin Draft Master Plan, which builds on the more than 51,000 ideas and feedback received from people during the Vision phase of the project.
“Brisbane is already recognised as Australia’s greenest capital city and our network of more than 2100 parks is a big part of the reason why,” Cr Schrinner said.
“Our plan for this parkland will further enhance that reputation, transforming 64-hectares of inner-city greenspace into an iconic destination.
“We want Victoria Park to be a place regularly visited by residents from right across Brisbane as well as a must-do experience for our visitors from across the world.
“It is extremely rare for a city the size of Brisbane to have an opportunity to transform a large slice of inner urban greenspace like this.
“That’s why we’re determined to do something so special.
“Over the park’s transformation we will increase tree canopy cover from 10 to 60 per cent, with more than 10,000 trees and shrubs already planted, including 80 native species.”
The Victoria Park/Barrambin Draft Master Plan includes new designs for a water-play areas, a tree house with panoramic views of the skyline and mountain ranges, a visitor centre and an edible garden.
The area’s natural environment will be restored and protected, under the Draft Master Plan.
Future works in the park will take into consideration the plans for the temporary equestrian cross country course and BMX freestyle events for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“This will be an incredible venue during the Brisbane 2032 Games and Council has already been working with experts to ensure that the equestrian cross country course is integrated into the master plan,” Cr Schrinner said.
“Once the Games are over, the course will revert to public use and our plan for that part of the parkland will proceed.”
Residents have already begun discovering Victoria Park/Barrambin since it was reinstated as a public parkland.
Cr Schrinner said resident feedback will continue to inform the transformation of the parkland over coming years.
“This will be a park for everyone, of all ages and of all interests,” he said.
“When residents look at this Draft Master Plan they will discover our vision to deliver new experiences, exciting adventure, and connections with nature.
“This is Brisbane’s biggest new park in more than 50 years, and we want it to be a place for people to come together and create memories. “
Environment, Parks and Sustainability Chair Tracy Davis said there were already works underway to enhance the parkland.
“Right now we’re getting ready to install new park furniture, shelters, picnic tables, barbecues and drinking fountains as we provide more opportunities for resident and visitors to visit the parkland and enjoy Brisbane’s outdoor lifestyle,” Cr Davis said.
“We had more than 15,000 people attend the parkland for the Green Heart Fair and thousands also attended as part of a recent Brisbane Festival event, “Voices of Vic Park”.
“Just last month we opened a brand-new direct access into the park from the Herston busway, making it even easier for people to visit and explore Brisbane’s biggest new park.
“The Draft Master Plan reveals the proposal for new connections through the park with accessible pathways and significant new pedestrian and cycle bridges that will connect Spring Hill and Herston, making it easier to get to and through the park via active travel.”
Feedback on the Draft Master Plan closes on Sunday 30 October 2022.

This is perfect, especially the rewilding aspect. I don’t know how the bridge will go running through Brisbane Grammar School though as that road is private from memory. (plus there is already a bridge there)
I’d still love to see the whole inner city bypass covered by a green bridge (just extend the current one in both directions.)
That would kill all that traffic noise and link Victoria Park with Gregory Tce Park. Plus you’d get alot more green space as well.
You could also add a train station anywhere along the existing exhibition loop trainline (which is currently undergoing upgrades to be a permanent line as part of cross river rail.) That gives you a station right in the middle of the park.
It was better as golf course. A total waste of funds
Is the driving range and restaurant facility staying as it is probably the most used public facility in the whole Brisbane area?
This looks after the top……too many trees,no golf course,, why motor cross and equestrian facilities. We all love the park as it is. Where do we park and why is for the Com Games. People walking all over the place. You wrecked Roma Street and now this.
What a waste of money. Overly complicated and far too intensive but I’ll bet the landscape architects make a fortune. What’s wrong with simple open space. Removing the golf course was a very bad move given how popular it was. I know this area very well having spent three years training over it for cross country at Grammar. It’s extremely hilly and just won’t be popular as a park.

This Draft Masterplan represents a lot of work carried out by a large and varied group of people and years of visioning with communities. The article notes that this is open for formal comment to BCC until Oct 30th. I would suggest that they are looking for further constructive feedback from the community rather than openly hostile, destructive comments. So if you have an opinion that would add positively to the development of this masterplan I urge you to do so and leave resentment at the door.
