California Laneway Proposal – Fortitude Valley

Brisbane’s strengthening laneway culture just got more exciting with another new laneway proposal by AMC Developments Pty Ltd headed by Charlie Apostolos, the former president of the Fortitude Valley Chamber of Commerce (FVCC).

AMC has lodged a development application to extend and redevelop California Lane in the Fortitude Valley into a vibrant, activated laneway precinct.

California Laneway is the Valley’s third laneway to undergo a complete transformation following the success of Winn Lane and the soon to be constructed Bakery Lane redevelopment (another AMC Development).

Brisbane City Council’s Vibrant Laneway program encourages and incentivises businesses to transform Brisbane’s derelict laneways into vibrant energetic spaces.

From the DA:

This precinct of the valley provides opportunities for a vibrant laneway community, with  Bakery Lane, Winn Lane and the subject site currently being hosting the designer markets

The proposed development of California Lane strengthens this relationship to the existing lane network

Charlie Apostolos who is redeveloping two Valley laneways said in a recent quest news article:

Bakery Lane will be like an incubator space where tenants can live, make and sell – much like the old style convenience store where you live at the back, have a another space to make your goods and sell them at the front.

Like Bakery Lane, California Lane will become a thriving urban space with mixed retail and will form a new cross block link from Ann Street to McLachlan St, linking via another laneway – ‘Lucky’s Lane’.
