Brisbane State High School is set to undergo a major redevelopment after a contract was awarded for the design and construction of a multi-storey complex at the school.

Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek said the redevelopment was part of a $60.5 million project that would cater to future growth at the school, including the move of Year 7 to high school.

“The contract has been awarded to Broad Construction Services, with work due for completion at the start of the 2016 school year,” Mr Langbroek said.

“The new building will feature 40 classrooms, an arts centre, staff centre, tuckshop and other essential amenities.

“It will cater to around 850 students, including Year 7, and enable the school to expand its enrolments to 3,000 students.”

Mr Langbroek said the Newman Government’s investment in Brisbane State High School was an investment in our state’s future.

“Everything we do in education is directed towards better student outcomes and investing in school infrastructure is vital,” he said.

“Providing our students with specialist facilities in a state-of-the-art learning environment ensures they have the best opportunity to learn, and therefore succeed in their studies, and in the future.”

During the redevelopment, Year 7 and 8 students will move into an interim, designated precinct on the school’s current Edmonstone Street site.

“This will make the double intake of students in 2015 a special experience for everyone involved,” Mr Langbroek said.

“Older facilities at the school will be demolished to make best use of the school’s tight, urban location and ensure that we best meet the needs of students and teachers well into the future.

“The redevelopment will continue to support the important role Brisbane State High School has played in providing students with great academic, cultural and sporting opportunities for the past 93 years.

“Brisbane State High School is a proud Independent Public School, one of 80 in Queensland.”

Nice building but terrible Government policy. 60 million dollars could repair and develope many schools in Brisbane South. So many schools are in a terrible state of repair. Many are over 50 years old.
