A new 65 storey mixed use development located at 2 Orchid Avenue, Surfers Paradise has been approved by the Gold Coast City Council.
The project has been proposed by developer Henry Yuen, through his company, Centa Surfers.
The design has evolved considerably from it’s initial submission with architect Archipelago developing a new concept for the building.
The genesis of our concept was an urban response – the redistribution of the mixed use program into a tripartite articulation of podium, mid-rise and tower with the interstitial spaces treated as sub-tropical gardens.
According to the development application there are eight floors on the lower podium levels designated for many different uses including an unknown tourist facility which interconnects to various restaurants, pools and hotel facilities.

Level 3 – Motel Reception/Pool Terrarce/Resturant
Level 4 – Restaurant
Level 5-9: Tourist Facility
Level 10: Conference Facilities/Business Club
Level 11: Motel Pool Terrace/Gym
Level 12: Motel Spa
Level 13: Plant
The developer could not confirm or deny that the unknown tourist facility was in fact going to be space for a second Gold Coast casino.
The Gold Coast is one of three locations identified by the Queensland Government for a new integrated casino resort developments, with Star Entertainment’s Queens Wharf in Brisbane now locked in and Aquis’s Yorkey’s Knob casino near Cairns as another potential location.

So does that mean Orchid Avenue will be closed off while the development takes place? What will happen to all the shops around the area? like Nando’s, Subway, Kebab shops etc?
