Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has revealed a new multi-use parkland precinct is being planned on the banks of the Brisbane River as part of his Council’s commitment to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Cr Schrinner made the announcement yesterday before the formation of the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee for the Olympic Games or the Olympic Coordination Authority (OCA) has been established which has caused the state government to question the motives of the Lord Mayor’s announcement.

Under the lord mayor’s plans, the seven-hectare site on Montague Road in South Brisbane would be purchased as part of the Games to house the International Broadcast Centre for the event and then converted to a parkland precinct.

“The mayors of South East Queensland began the journey to pursue these Games because they realised the incredible legacy this would create for Brisbane and the rest of the region,” he said.

“This new area on the banks of the Brisbane River is precisely the type of legacy they envisaged, great new assets that would benefit all residents and make our wonderful city even better.

“For a decade and more, people have talked about South Bank being extended along this part of our river and I am so pleased we’re now moving forward to make those dreams become a reality.

“World Expo 88’ was the catalyst for the creation of South Bank and now Brisbane 2032 will facilitate the next phase of this evolution.”

Negotiations with the owner of the industrial business on the site have already begun.

As detailed in the Future Host Commission Report released before last week’s historic decision, a temporary 57,000 m venue will be constructed on the land for an International Broadcast Centre where the world’s media will work from during the Games.

The temporary building will then be removed and converted into a multi-use parkland precinct similar to South Bank.

This aligns with the intent of the draft Kurilpa Riverfront Renewal Master-Plan which the Council was working on with the State several years ago.

A similar proposal was mooted by the State Government in 2012 which involved a mix of public and commercial use along the riverbank, including an entertainment, retail and dining precinct and parkland.

“Obviously, the Games are some years away but we’re eager to get on with the job of delivering this and other amazing new assets for the people of Brisbane,” Cr Schrinner said.

“This will give us plenty of time to work with the State to secure the land and for Council to masterplan this area for all Brisbane residents in the future.”

Weak offering, big payday for the industrial company that is vacating the space. This isn’t convenient or easy to reach. Waste of taxpayer dollars.

It’s a bit of a stretch to call this tiny green strip a parkland.

In addition to that I would probably consider a new green bridge between Milton and west end.

This would be an incredible addition to the city. I am extremely excited to see what will happen to Brisbane over the coming years and this is just one of the many projects that will start to bring the idea of brisbane becoming a world renowned city to life.

I reckon this new development needs to be a little taller, so that:
    A) more people can live in this area, therefore catapulting local activity
    B) the Brisbane city skyline, in my opinion, should eventually move past just the boundaries of the CBD, as Sydney has done with North Sydney and Bondi Junction. When Brisbane becomes bigger in 11 years time, this entire area of Southbank will remain as-is, with no room for taller buildings elsewhere, as these ‘master planned’ buildings all have a fixed height. We should be planning ahead so we can accommodate interesting architecture beyond the CBD in decades to come.
    C) as I just mentioned, the architectural value will remain interesting if the site was to include less compacted ‘short-ish’ buildings but left room for major infrastructure projects that could be undertaken to show the uniqueness of Brisbane in years to come. We don’t want to set all this in stone to regret it down the track! After all, like how developments in Tenerife and Hamilton are becoming, eventually reusing the same design style for every building becomes redundant and less attractive. Perhaps brisbane could house the worlds largest 6-star green tower one day? It’s all a matter of future at this stage, and we shouldn’t jump into these opportunities without some super delicate thought first.

The Kurilpa masterplan is a travesty. The offering of the narrow parkland is measly compared to the amount of land taken up by towers & internal roads. The size of the parkland offered in that document is not even adequate for the population it proposes to move in adjacent.

Brisbane has a serve shortage of significant inner-city public space and all opportunities have to be seized to capture back land.

I think this proposal would be amazing. But should it not work around a new world expo in Brisbane? Could pay itself off that way!

The area is already excellent. This change..is not required to host the olympics. It has no merit, other than to appease the corrupt and self interested Adrian Schrinner.

I’m 50-50 on the idea I think it had to be with we think things through OK be pedicle here? Been close to Brisbane River I want to see more drainage on the river itself to you have a Retainer wall how far is a high limit on the guidelines Environment impact study before you get the go ahead depend on the price I don’t want to risk anyone because of the major consequences

Strip of parkland compared to amount of
buildings proposed is too narrow. Front row of buildings closer to river need to be removed and added to parkland giving it more width. This may be the only space available to erect brisbanes unique landmark that is being considered. Please make buildings more aesthetically and architecturally unique.

This is just another announceables by the “Schrinner Council” and does not represent the will of the people of Brisbane. Lots of bucks to be made, not a lot of aesthetic appeal. Just more opportunities for the developers. Shameful overdevelopment masquerading as a public asset yet again. Yawn.

As usual there are no plans to include cyling paths through the proposed development. Riverside drive is already a busy active hub and this will make it difficult to transit through like the Howard Smith Warves.

    Great going team.

I like the master plan however, putting a high rise right across the street of a low rise residential is a big no for me (refer to the buildings in Peel Street). The height of the building will block the sunlight and affect the air flow of the other residential buildings. Please consider the residents apartments living in vicinity and work out a better plan that takes into consideration of the neighbouring residents. Thank you.
