A development application has been lodged for a significant mixed-use precinct at 318 Miles Platting Road, Rochedale, centred around the relocation and expansion of Shafston International College. The proposal, submitted by Shafston College, seeks preliminary approval to enable a new master planned campus and integrated urban precinct in Brisbane’s south.

Shafston International College, currently based at Kangaroo Point, plans to shift its operations to the Rochedale site, where it intends to deliver a broader curriculum and purpose-built education facilities as part of a growing knowledge precinct. The new campus would form the heart of a diverse, lifestyle-oriented community that integrates student housing, residential apartments, short-term accommodation, retail, wellness, and public green space.

The relocation marks a major repositioning for the College, which has outgrown its inner-city footprint and is looking to expand into high-demand disciplines such as teacher training, aviation, hospitality, carpentry, and automotive. According to the applicant, the Rochedale site offers the scale, connectivity and flexibility needed to support long-term institutional growth while fostering an education-led urban village.

Established in 1996, Shafston International College has operated from a prominent riverfront site at Kangaroo Point, offering vocational training and English language education to thousands of domestic and international students. The move to Rochedale would mark a new chapter for the college, enabling expansion into in-demand industries while embedding itself in a future-facing precinct alongside residential and commercial offerings.

The campus forms part of a broader education and employment strategy, with the aim to create a live-work-learn precinct. Residential buildings surrounding the campus would offer a mix of private apartments and student accommodation. New commercial tenancies, wellness offerings, and flexible workspaces would support both the college and the broader community.

The planning report notes that the Rochedale area is experiencing significant population growth and housing demand, making it well-placed for a knowledge precinct that can offer local educational and employment opportunities.

The DKO-led site masterplan places education uses centrally, surrounded by mid-rise mixed-use buildings. A large village green is proposed as the community’s heart, complemented by a linear park, shaded footpaths and communal spaces. ASPECT Studios’ landscape strategy draws inspiration from the Bulimba Creek corridor, aiming to restore green links and enhance local amenity.

The site benefits from proximity to the future Eight Mile Plains Bus Rapid Transit station (approx. 850 metres away), as well as the Pacific and Gateway Motorways. A new intersection with Miles Platting Road is proposed, with private internal roads throughout the precinct.

Engineering reports confirm the site can be serviced with upgrades and easements secured through adjacent properties. Stormwater, sewerage, and water connections would require coordination with Brisbane City Council, Urban Utilities and the Department of Transport and Main Roads, which owns adjoining land to the north.
