A development application has been submitted by Vicinity Centres for the refurbishment of Queens Plaza along Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall.
The proposed changes include a new awning design, internal reconfiguration works for an updated tenancy layout as well as cosmetic changes to the building’s facade.
Designed by Blight Rayner, the most notable change to the building’s exterior would be a modified ‘lightweight’ external glass awning around the Queen Street frontage as well as partial Edward Street frontage.
According to the development application, the new glass awnings will result in a reduction in the bulk and heaviness and will overall create a lightness in the appearance of the building, specifically for the prominent Edward and Queen Street corner.
Additionally, a new 355 sqm-elevated bar is proposed on level one which would open up to a new balcony and subtropical arbour which overlooks the mall below.
As part of the proposal, the level one void that looks down onto the ground floor would be widened with some retail tenancies expanded.
A new media screen is also mentioned in the planning documents, which would be positioned at the existing large void fronting Queen Street.
Queen’s Plaza was built in 2005 and houses anchor tenancies David Jones and Coles as well as over 60 specialty boutiques and high-end retailers.

Again another reburshment? It seems.all they keep doing is just renovate the whole place of queen street more every 5 year. We dont need constantly change. I remember since the 1990s snd rhen rhe 2000s constantly anither new reburshment. This is ridiculous. Leave it as it is… show some old history done. And dont jsut wipe the past. Of all they think is modern and modern then Brisbane has nothing to show of the past. Because its jsur always new a the times. It get boring seen always new on just about everything something. They just reburshment rhe place not so long ago.. there goes your pocket money. This is not good enough. Other countries has historic plazas. Brisbane has nothing. Its always has to be new and new.. and waste money all the times.
I think MYER CENTRE/UPTOWN is in a more desperate need of a Refurbishment than Queens Plaza
