Brisbane is continuing to shine as a City of Lights, with Brisbane City Council completing a $1.1 million energy efficient upgrade to the lighting of Victoria Bridge, which will see it lit in a vibrant Christmas display from tonight.
Deputy Mayor and Infrastructure Chairman Cr Adrian Schrinner said the bridge had joined the ranks of iconic Brisbane structures kitted out with decorative LED lighting in the latest of a series of Council projects designed to increase Brisbane’s distinctive and memorable identity, while making the city a vibrant place to be at night.
“The new decorative LED lighting along Victoria Bridge has replaced the old, obsolete fluorescent tube lights with 236 economical LED light fittings which can be programmed for variable displays similar to those on Story Bridge and City Hall,” Cr Schrinner said.
“The Victoria Bridge, has had the same fluorescent lights since the bridge was opened in 1969, and this will not only bring the bridge into the 21st century, but add to our already vibrant lighting displays across the CBD.
“The lights are located under the footpath and will be remotely programmable, allowing for an impressive range of colours and visually stunning effects to be displayed along the vertical face of the bridge.
“Similar to the Story Bridge and City Hall, the Victoria Bridge which will be able to be lit to highlight important community causes and events.”
The bridge will be lit with a dynamic Christmas themed display will commence on 3 December 2015 and will be shown on the bridge each night throughout the month. The display will commence at 7pm, 8pm, 9pm and 10pm each evening, run for between 5-10 minutes.
The new LED fittings reduce energy consumption by more than 60 per cent, as well as providing significant cost savings in maintenance, due to the increased reliability of LED technology.
Cr Schrinner said making Brisbane a ‘City of Lights’ was part of the Lord Mayor’s commitment to fund a range of CBD lighting displays as well as new city artworks and public art on infrastructure.
“Installing LED lighting on other locations including the Story Bridge and City Hall has secured these popular landmarks as vibrant and inviting locations that have contributed to our identity as a vibrant New World City,” he said.
“Brisbane is a hub of culture and creativity, and Council will look to partner with building owners to light up Brisbane landmarks as well as identify other landmarks to be lit.
“Council is dedicated to boosting Brisbane’s reputation as a vibrant, New World City that’s an exciting and engaging location for people to live, work, and visit.”
