Designs for Brisbane’s next ferry terminal have been revealed as Brisbane City Council moves ahead with delivering its 26th ferry terminal.
Public and Active Transport Chair Krista Adams said the new terminal at Howard Smith Wharves would transport residents and visitors right into the heart of one of Brisbane’s most popular lifestyle destinations.
“We have worked collaboratively with the Howard Smith Wharves Consortium to find the most suitable location for this new terminal and are now going through the development application process,” Cr Adams said.
“We have committed more than $70 million over four years to upgrade our world-class ferry terminals, with this new terminal to be funded by Council, with a contribution from Howard Smith Wharves.
“This terminal will be similar to Council’s recently upgraded ferry terminals and will be designed to ensure river views are maintained and the terminal is fitting for the setting.
“The terminal is proposed to be located upstream at the river shed buildings and concrete steps.”
Cr Adams said the ferry terminal would provide an additional way for people to travel to Howard Smith Wharves, as well as provide connectivity to the New Farm Riverwalk and the surrounding areas of Fortitude Valley and Kangaroo Point via the Story Bridge.
“Travelling along our river by CityCat or ferry is so popular with more than 5 million passengers jumping on board each year,” she said.
“The Howard Smith Wharves precinct is so popular with residents and visitors and I expect the new terminal will see patronage continue to grow.”
Central Ward Councillor Vicki Howard said central Brisbane was one of the best places to live, work and relax and the new Howard Smith Wharves ferry terminal would provide even more ways for residents and visitors to travel to and from the premier outdoor precinct.
“Council worked together with HSW Nominees to deliver this amazing part of Brisbane and I am very proud that more than 1000 people are now employed in the precinct and that so many people have embraced the space,” Cr Howard said.
“Whether you’re commuting to work or taking a weekend trip with family or friends, this new ferry terminal will provide a convenient and stress-free way to travel to the City.”
Council has already completed geotechnical investigations and plans to start construction from late 2020.
The construction tender is planned to be awarded as one package and will include the construction of the South Bank Ferry Terminal.
Once completed, it is anticipated it will initially cater for cross river CityFerry services, with CityCat services down the track.

Council needs to position ferry terminals outside the CBD, such as in Westlake, Jindalee, etc that will aid in reducing congestion along the Western Freeway and provide residents with alternative Public Transport options.
Why does the ferry terminal block the view from the seating area located on the bank. Its failry nice area to relax and take in the view of the city, I might not be the best option to be looking directly at a busy terminal?
