The Queensland Government has unveiled plans for a $67 million upgrade of Brisbane’s Central Station which will be staged over three years.
Queensland’s busiest station which accommodates up to 140,000 passengers per day has not seen any major works program since the 1990’s.
750 jobs would be created as part of the upgrade which includes revitalisation of the historic station building which is 127 years old.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the new upgrade will honour the iconic station’s heritage features but also ensure the station keeps pace with design changes and delivers modern facilities for passengers.
The upgrade has been designed by PDT Architects and will undergo the following works:
- A new roof, which will extend over the Edward Street end of the concourse, injecting light and improved ventilation, and give the station a modern, airy feel
- Complete modernisation of the platforms, including ceiling, wall and floor treatments and lighting, level entry boarding, extended cover on Platforms 2/3 and 3/4, new passenger information displays and seating
- New lifts and modernisation of the stairs and escalators leading to platforms
- An additional escalator from the concourse to ANZAC Square, to reduce congestion during peak periods
- A refurbishment of the back of house facilities, including offices, communications rooms and first aid areas.
Transport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the upgrade will deliver a fresh new look, and make it easier for passengers to access and move around the station – one of the city’s most critical interchanges – with improvements including less cluttered and more accessible platforms, new information displays and lighting.
“The most striking feature of the new-look station will be a new, raised roof which will extend over the Edward Street end of the concourse, with a glass facade that will transform the station and inject the space with more light”, transport minister Hinchliffe said.
Central station will remain open throughout the project with work staged and planned to ensure the station can continue to be fully operational throughout the upgrade.
Most of the works will occur at night and on weekends to minimise disruption to passengers.
Work on ‘back of house’ facilities including offices, communications rooms and first aid areas will commence this month followed by new lifts, escalators and platform upgrades in early 2017.

Are you sure $67m is enough ?
raising the platforms is nice but you should spend most of this money to make fortitude valley station more flood proof as flooding at fortitude valley has already shutdown the trains before. This is a silly development, meanwhile workers on the cairns hospital board are being fired for a $80 million blowout the premier dose this.
Silly investment of funds to make it look nice. the station does not get 140,000 passengers a day. A fancy expensive roof is not going to make it better. will be another Eagle Junction. theres more stations to upgrade where disabled people cannot use. we don’t need a narrow minded investment that locks the city into a useless project for generations. the government should unlock the potential to develop the whole area through a PPP. and less government investment.
