Albert Street – Brisbane’s New Subway Station

Brisbane will soon have a new underground station at lower Albert street, with the Cross River Rail team releasing plans for it’s newest planned underground station.

The subway tunnel, branded as ‘Cross River Rail’ will be designed to hold a capacity of 120,000 people during peak hours and includes four new underground stations which are proposed for Boggo Rd Urban Village, Wooloongabba, Albert St (CBD South) and Roma Street (CBD North).

The stations will cost around $100 million each while the total estimated price tag on the Cross River Rail project itself is around $8 billion. The project will be funded using federal and state government funds, while retail and commercial opportunities will be created inside the stations in order to source private sector funding.

The immediate area around Albert street has seen a large amount of development activity in recent years with Sunland’s recent Carrington Tower proposal, on the corner of Alice and Albert streets as well as the recently completed AM60 office tower are some projects around this area of the CBD which will directly benefit from the lower Albert Street subway station.

The government estimates that the current Merivale rail bridge in South Brisbane will reach capacity in 2016 and plans to deliver the project by before this capacity is reached. Visit the Cross River Rail site here.
